6 Tips Runners Can Use to Avoid Sun Damage
Most of us love being out in the sunshine for summer training. And while you can’t beat the benefits of vitamin D, overexposure to UV rays can lead to skin cancer years down the road. In fact, skin cancer is the most common cancer in the United States.
Check out these tips to enjoy your summer runs, while staying smart about preventing skin damage from the sun’s UV rays:
Avoid running outdoors during the sunniest time of day — usually between 10 am and 4 pm.
Wear a sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or greater every day; keeping in mind that you can still get UV exposure on a cloudy day.
Select a sunscreen with zinc, silica or titanium, as these tend to stand up better to sweat. Reapply as needed (as you sweat).
Wear a hat to prevent your scalp from getting burned, and wear sunglasses for more facial protection.
Avoid running shirtless beneath the sun. Opt for a lightweight, breathable shirt made with UPF fabrics. Clothing made from tightly woven and darker fibers will let less UV radiation reach your skin.
Always have your doctor check any moles that have recently changed shape, as well as any skin lesions that won’t heal, or any new skin growths.
